Limited Relief for Suffolk County
In September 2024, the IRS announced tax relief for individuals and businesses in Suffolk County New York who were affected by the torrential rainfalls that began on August 18, 2024. (See IR-2024-234.)
Unfortunately, New York State has not provided such relief, but a representative of New York State has indicated that affected taxpayers can request relief from New York State which will be considered on a case-by-case basis and may or may not be granted.
For the federal relief, affected individuals and households that reside or have a business in Suffolk County have until February 3, 2025 to file their 2023 federal returns, if they had a valid extension.
In addition, quarterly estimated taxes that were due on September 16, 2024 and/or January 15, 2025 will be due on February 3, 2025, and quarterly payroll and excise tax returns normally due on October 31, 2024 and January 31, 2025 will also be due on February 3, 2025.
The IRS will automatically provide filing and penalty relief to any taxpayer with an IRS address of record that is located in Suffolk County. Taxpayers who live outside of Suffolk County but whose records necessary to meet a deadline are located in an affected area need to contact the IRS to request relief.
