NYS Homeowner Tax Rebate Credit Checks

In June 2022, New York State began mailing checks to certain homeowners as part of its new homeowner tax rebate credit program.  Based on current law, this program is scheduled to expire after 2022.

To be eligible for the 2022 checks, homeowners must be registered for the STAR exemption or STAR credit, and they must have had income of $250,000 or less on their 2020 income tax returns.

For this purpose, income is defined as federal adjusted gross income adjusted for certain losses.  (Add back any separate loss deducted on the federal return that exceeds $3,000, and if the total of all losses deducted on the federal return exceed $15,000, add back the excess of such combined losses.)

The amount of the check sent to a homeowner depends on where the homeowner lives and on the homeowner’s income.  The largest checks go to those with income of $75,000 or less, and the amount of the checks is reduced for those with income over $75,000, over $150,000 and over $200,000.  Homeowners can look up the amount for which they are eligible at: https://www.tax.ny.gov/pit/property/htrc/lookup.htm
